Under 13 and 15’s Qualify but final heartbreak for under 11’s
Report by Johnny Burke
Liam Mellows under 13 and 15 teams have qualified for the finals of the Coiste Camogaiocht an Iathar (City League) with victories over Moycullen and Carnmore respectively but there was heartbreak for the under 11’s in their decider.

The under 15 team photograph are Back Row Left to Right Nicole Sylver, Roisin Cunningham, Jessica Palmer, Emma Mc Sweeney, Sinead Folan, Emma Elwood, Becky Anderson, Sorcha Minihan, Katie Burke, Sinead Minihan. Front Row Left to Right Laura Beirne, Danielle Byrne, Aoife Mc Peake, Shauna Fox, Jennifer Burke, Amy O Sullivan
The under 13 game was played in Mellows and Moycullen put in a great effort but in the end Mellows ran out winners. Best for Mellows on the day were Rachel Honan, Sinead Minihan, Pamela Mc Donagh and Eimear Kelly.
The under 15 team took on Carnmore in Carnmore and in a close and exciting game Mellows came out on top on a score of Mellows 2-4 Carnmore1-1. It was certainly a game of two half’s with Carnmore dominating the first but a combination of good Mellows defending and some wayward shooting saw Mellows still in the game at half time. Playing the second half with wind advantage Mellows came more into the game and two goals, one from Sorcha and the other from Sinead Minihan changed the direction and complexion of the game. Mellows half back line became a launch pad for many attacks with Emma Mc Sweeney, Aoife Mc Peake and Jennifer Burke operating as a very effective unit. Shauna Fox kept the scoreboard ticking over and the work rate and pressure applied by Katie Burke and Emma Elwood ensured the free running Sinead Folan, Sorcha and Sinead Minihan and Becky Anderson ensured Mellows were doing enough to claim the victory.
Under 11 Semi Final
Liam Mellows took on Carnmore in the Coiste Camogaiocht an Iathar (City League) semi final on Saturday last and what a cracker it turned out to be. Mellows went in at half time trailing on a score of 2-2 to 0-0. Mellows did have some chances in the first half but a some solid defending by the Carnmore defence and some excellent saves by their goalie meant that Mellows had an up hill battle for the second half.
Mellows got the ideal start to the second half with a goal from Niamh Mc Peake with their very first attack. This was quickly followed by an Ellen Burke goal and a pointed free to leave the minimum between the teams. Carnmore launched a number of attacks but Helena Mc Donagh and Roisin Hughes were defending with great gusto. The next score would be crucial and following an excellent solo run an Ellen Burke shot hit the back of the Carnmore net to give her side the lead. Mellows continued to press and Roisin Hughes added another Mellows goal. Ellen Burke converted a thirty to send Mellows into the final where they would play Craughwell.
Under 11 Final
This final was played on the new pitch in Mellows however there wasn’t to be a happy ending as Craughwell were deserved winners. Craughwell got the ideal start and were two goals up early into the first half. Mellows didn’t panic and gradually they worked their way into the game. Goals from Niamh Mc Peake and Ellen Burke had them back on level terms and if they had a little more luck in front of goal they could have been leading. Then after a period of Mellows pressure Craughwell scored another goal just before half time to go in a goal up.
The second half was similar to the first with Craughwell getting the first to scores but some positional switches on the Craughwell team saw them cancel out the Mellows threat. To Mellows great credit they never gave up despite things not happening for them on the score board. This young Mellows team can be well pleased with their efforts as most of there are underage again next year and if the girls continue to make progress like they did this year the future has to be bright for them and the club.
